Everyone experiences painful muscles or restricted joint movement at some point. Dry needling is a proven effective method in which trigger points are treated specifically, for rapid pain relief and restoration of muscle function.
Your complaints may be caused by one or more trigger points. In a properly functioning muscle, blood can flow through the muscle without problems, supplying it with nutrients and removing waste products. However, if you experience stress, frequently repeat the same movement, have tired muscles, have to sit still for long periods or have (old) sports injuries, trigger points can develop in the muscles.
These trigger points are tiny muscle cramps (commonly known as muscle knots) that you may not necessarily feel yourself, but which can cause pain, sometimes even in places other than where the pain is felt. This is called referred pain.
These trigger points prevent blood from flowing properly through the muscles, causing problems in an area. Dry needling differs from acupuncture: it specifically targets myofascial trigger points based on anatomical and physiological principles.

Persistent muscle pain and stiffness that does not resolve with rest or conventional massage.
Limited mobility of a joint caused by muscle tension around the joint.
Tingling or radiating pain in the arms or legs originating from trigger points in the back or neck.
Tension headaches and certain forms of dizziness associated with trigger points in the neck region.
Trigger points can disrupt muscle function to such an extent that measurable strength loss occurs in a muscle group, even without obvious pain.

The therapist maps your complaints through an intake and physical examination to determine the exact location of trigger points.
Using a thin, sterile acupuncture needle, the qualified physiotherapist inserts it into the trigger point. This causes a brief, local muscle twitch (twitch response).
After the twitch, the muscle relaxes, blood flow improves and pain decreases. After treatment you will notice a clear difference almost immediately, or at most a day later: where the muscles were previously tight, you can now move them much more freely. The treated area may be briefly tender, which is normal.
After treatment you receive exercises to keep the muscles flexible and prevent the return of trigger points.

Answers to the most common questions about Dry Needling
During insertion you may feel a brief, local muscle twitch: the so-called twitch response. This feels different from ordinary pain and only lasts a moment. After treatment the treated area may be tender for 1 to 2 days, which is normal and temporary.

“Kind and attentive man, even though physio massages do hurt a little of course. Knows when something is beyond his scope — such as a herniated disc that cannot be resolved through physiotherapy — and is honest about it. Great guy!”
“Due to my ADHD I find it very difficult to keep up with exercises at home. In the past I had become enormously frustrated with physiotherapy and had almost given up. Thanks to Menno I have regained that confidence. He is very good at keeping it fun and challenging and is able to work around my limitations. Because of that I genuinely enjoy going to him and I am seeing noticeable results!”
“I am so glad to have found Menno! He thinks along really well, has a lot of knowledge and I can usually get an appointment quickly. Highly recommended!”
